Tell me more about Telogen Effluvium

What is Telogen Effluvium?

Telogen effluvium is a common type of hair loss that occurs when a larger-than-normal number of hair follicles enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair growth cycle and subsequently shed. Unlike some other forms of hair loss, telogen effluvium is typically temporary and reversible. Here are some key points to know about telogen effluvium:

Causes: Telogen effluvium can be triggered by various factors, such as:

  • Physical or emotional stress: Severe stress, whether it's from a traumatic event, surgery, illness, or major life changes, can disrupt the hair growth cycle and lead to hair loss.

  • Hormonal changes: Hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid disorders can contribute to telogen effluvium.

  • Nutritional deficiencies: Inadequate intake of certain nutrients, especially iron, biotin, and protein, can lead to hair loss.

  • Medications: Some medications, including certain antibiotics, anticoagulants, and antidepressants, may cause telogen effluvium as a side effect.

  • Crash diets: Rapid weight loss, particularly through extreme or crash dieting, can trigger hair loss
